Analyse survey data and build graphs for possible display.

Στόχοι, μηνύματα, έννοιες

Συγεκεκριμένοι στόχοι

  • Raise awareness of physical activity-related habits.
  • Analyse data about physical activity levels in the community and compare it to that of other communities.
  • Prepare for a meeting with an occupational therapist.

Συγκεκριμένα μηνύματα

  • Children and adolescents do not get enough physical activity both in Israel and many other countries around the world.
  • Exercise contributes to physical and mental health (e.g. stress release) and improves functional ability (e.g. concentration).
  • It is recommended that people exercise for at least an hour a day. In addition, it is advised to undertake more vigorous activities three times a week, such as ball games, push-ups, and other strength-building exercises.

step 1

In the coming weeks, students will learn about the connection between physical activity and health, and about the systems of the human body. At the end of the unit, students will be asked to divide into groups and develop activities for kindergarten children based on what they have learned.

step 2

Students will begin with an introductory exercise where they are asked to jump on the spot on one leg for two minutes – they should be encouraged to not lower their other leg during the activity. Afterwards, ask students whether they improved and encourage them to continue practising the exercise to improve their physical abilities.

step 3

Next, recap on what was learned from the previous week’s survey, which gathered information about the movement-related habits of children the same age as students, to identify the amount of time they move/exercise during the day. In upcoming lessons, students will be reminded that discussions will take place to identify why regular exercise during the course of the day is important, and learn about the organs in the body that give people the ability to move.

step 4

Presenting the result of the survey to students:

  • Enter the data to an Excel file - show students the table.
  • Looking at this table, ask students whether it is easy to analyse the data and draw conclusions from it.
  • In addition, students should be asked whether they can determine a clearer way to view the data.

step 5

Show the result graphs to the students and analyse the data with them. It is recommended to first present the question and ask the students to formulate a theory (what they expect the result to be), and only then to reveal the actual results (everyone knows what they answered in the survey and will be curious to know how their answer compares to others).
You can show this video about different kinds of graphs and their uses to expand the discussion.

step 6

Compare the extent of physical activity of youth around the world with the survey data from the neighbourhood:

  • This activity should be delivered as a quiz. Ask a question, have the students answer, present the correct result, and add more information.
  • Recommendations for quiz questions (see resources).
  • You can summarise the importance of exercise by showing this video.

step 7

In the next lesson students will meet an occupational therapist. Ask students if they know what an occupational therapist does and to think about some questions that they could ask this expert.

  1. What does an occupational therapist do?
  2. What areas of study are required to become an occupational therapist?
  3. etc.

Collect the student's questions and send them to the OT before the meeting.
