Course of activity

step 1

Working groups, students will plan out what they need for a double page spread in the recipe book. They will then make a plan and divide tasks between the group (who takes the pictures, designs the spreadsheet and recreates the snack). They will determine how they want to present the ingredients for the recipe.

step 2

Next, students will collate all their previous work such as research, ingredients, packaging, etc. to be photographed. They will set up a spot to photograph the ingredients, install a camera on a tripod and practice with lighting the area properly:

  • Ingredients should be nicely presented on a large sheet of coloured paper.
  • The photo should be taken from above.

step 3

Once the pictures are taken, groups will split up into two. One half will start designing the recipe book spread and the other will start cooking the snack.

step 4

Making the snack:

  • Prepare the snack again
  • Photograph the snack using the established set up

step 5

Putting together the recipe book pages:

  • Students will use design software (i.e. Inkscape) to put together their design.
  • One page will show pictures of the ingredients, nutritional values and benefits, and ecological footprint information researched during the previous Learning Units.
  • They should consider fonts and layout to make an attractive and informative document.
  • The other page of the spread will show the picture of the snack in the designed packaging.

step 6

Finally, the groups will come back together to determine if the spread is successful and communicate what they have learned during the previous Learning Units. Each group’s work will then be collated into one recipe book of healthy snacks.
